VIX futures are futures on CBOE Volatility Index, better known as the VIX and sometimes nicknamed “the Fear Index”, as it tends to spike when stocks fall and investors are fearful. Based on the contract specs for the VIX futures the CFE/CBOE may list up to 6 near term serial months and up to 5 months on the February quarterly cycle (ie G, K, Q and X).
